BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Prepares for Expected Strong Winter Storm

Travelers Advised to Monitor Airline / Airport Web Sites for Possible Flight Cancellations

Baltimore/ Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport personnel are on full alert in preparation for a strong storm that is expected to hit this weekend.

Airlines often cancel flights in advance of or during heavy snowstorms. BWI Marshall Airport strongly recommends that travelers check with their airline for current flight information before heading to the Airport. Customers are advised to monitor airline or Airport web sites through the weekend to be aware of possible flight cancellations. BWI Marshall Airport’s website is—www.BWIairport.com.

“Winter operations are a shared responsibility that Airport personnel and airlines take very seriously.,” said Timothy L. Campbell, Executive Director of the Maryland Aviation Administration. “We will work very hard to help ensure the safe operation of BWI Marshall Airport during the expected snow.”

Snow-removal crews, both Airport employees and contractors, will be activated in advance of the expected snow. The snow teams will work to remove snow and ice from Airport runways, taxiways, and ramp areas, as well as public roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks. Airport workers will have access to more than 70 pieces of specialized snow removal equipment, including plows, chemical trucks, brooms, and several multi-function runway clearing vehicles. Independent contractors called in for snow removal will be able to utilize many more trucks and other vehicles.

Airport winter operations are a shared responsibility. A great deal of planning and preparation is conducted year-round to ensure the Airport is ready for winter weather. BWI Marshall Airport is responsible for snow removal and safe operations of the facility. The airlines de-ice aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration controls air traffic and manages the movement of aircraft on the airfield.
