BWI to Modify Traffic Pattern on Upper Level of Terminal Roadway

May 25th change provides more lanes and will allow for completion of new roadway, median, and canopies
BWI AIRPORT, MD (May 23, 2006) - Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) today announced that the traffic pattern on the upper level of the Airport’s terminal roadway will change on May 25. The shift will allow completion of the roadway expansion work.

Roadway traffic along the upper level will be split into two groups, similar to the existing condition in the region of the Airport’s Concourse A/B facility. A dedicated commercial lane will be for authorized BWI buses only; the public lanes will be for all other vehicles.

The outer curb of the new median will be opened to allow for convenient passenger drop-off. The inner curb of the new median will continue to be a work zone. Temporary pedestrian crosswalks from the median to the Airport terminal will be opened as part of the shift.

The BWI terminal roadway is being expanded to improve traffic flow in front of the terminal and to provide additional capacity. The expansion will double the amount of curbside space to make it easier to drop-off or pick-up travelers. Separate lanes for the public and commercial vehicles are being constructed on the upper level roadway, and an express exit lane is being added to the lower level roadway. The expansion of the BWI terminal roadway, along with the new median and canopies, is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2006.
