First Class Seating Arrives at BWI Marshall Airport

“Carolina Rockers” provide customers with comfortable seating in Airport’s Observation Gallery
BWI AIRPORT, MD (August 09, 2007) -
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport recently positioned 25 wooden “Carolina Rocker” rocking chairs in the terminal. The solid oak, white rocking chairs are situated in the Airport’s acclaimed Observation Gallery, where visitors can experience comfortable seating high above the airfield.

The rocking chairs now in place at BWI Marshall were manufactured by the P & P Chair Company from Asheboro, North Carolina. The company creates the chairs, popularly known as the “Kennedy Rocker.” President John F. Kennedy was fond of the high-backed rocking chairs because of the comfort provided for his back pain. He ordered his first Carolina Rocker in 1955 as a U.S. Senator, and moved it with him to the White House.

“The new rocking chairs are an example of the service that BWI Marshall provides to customers,” said Timothy L. Campbell, Executive Director of the Maryland Aviation Administration. “The chairs add to the charm of the Airport’s Observation Gallery, which is an outstanding location for travelers to relax before or after a flight.”

The BWI Observation Gallery is located on the upper level of the terminal, between Concourses B and C. The Observation Gallery provides views of commercial aircraft operations, as well as a number of exhibits related to aviation. Included in the Airport’s Observation Gallery is a children’s play area and a Youth Art Gallery which displays student artwork.
